Romney wool is perfect for harder-wearing textiles, but finer lamb fleeces are often worn next to skin. The breed is a favorite among hand spinners for its long staple length, strength, drape, and moderate elasticity. The breed is believed to be descended from the long wool variety of sheep brought to Britain by the Romans in the 1st century CE. Today there are two main varieties of Romney sheep; Old Style, being similar in characteristic to those raised in the marshy areas of southern Kent from time immemorial, and New Style or Improved. This newer style came from the addition of Bakewell’s Leicesters to the breed in the 19th century. Both varieties are considered dual purpose breeds, providing both meat and wool.
