With a similar structure to the true Down breeds, the wool of Cheviot sheep does not easily felt. It’s a good medium grade wool, suitable for items such as socks, everyday sweaters, and blankets. This particular fiber comes from the Southern Cheviot Hills in Northern England, where the breed originated in the 14th and 15th centuries. Legend has it that the breed is descended from a flock of sheep that escaped when a Spanish ship ran aground in the 14th century. Since then, both Merino and Lincoln bloodlines have made their way into the breed. Today’s Cheviot’s are mostly bred for the production of meat, but as you will soon find, their lovely wool puts them firmly in the dual-purpose category.
